Beyonce: The Billboard Q&A
posted on 03 Oct 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> Singer. Songwriter. Philanthropist. Entrepreneur. Actress. Producer. Beyoncé may be the hardest-working woman in showbiz. Take the four days leading up to MTV's recent Video Music Awards. Beyoncé wraps a run-through of her Radio City Music Hall performance at midnight Thursday evening. Friday morning at 10 a.m., it's déjà vu as she returns to rehearsal mode. A dressing room break is anything but: chats with MTV personnel about show logistics segue into an editing session for her next project -- a DVD culled from a summer stand at the Wynn Las Vegas. Later that evening, Beyoncé makes a surprise appearance at husband Jay-Z's Sept. 11 Madison Square Garden show. Then right after the VMAs, Beyoncé and her alter ego Sasha Fierce catch a flight to Australia to kick off the next leg of their I Am... world tour. As she ticks off her jam-packed schedule, an unfrazzled Beyoncé dismisses her multitasking with a laugh: "It's just one of those grind weeks. It will be less hectic when I'm in Australia." A world tour is less hectic? As you exhale and ponder that irony, it becomes clear that this is someone who thrives on hard work and fierce determination. Before slipping back into her signature stilettos, Billboard's 2009 Woman of the Year shares how she balances work and relaxation, feeds her philanthropic passions and envisions her future. Beyonce: The Billboard Cover Story

>> Fans are still getting to know Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé's musical alter ego, formally introduced on the singer's 2008 album, "I Am...Sasha Fierce." Most probably don't know, however, that the singer/songwriter has been friends with Fierce since elementary school. Manager and father Mathew Knowles will never forget the moment he first met Fierce. A 7-year-old Beyoncé was entered in a talent search open to Houston elementary and middle school students. The song she sang? John Lennon's "Imagine." "Beyoncé was the youngest," Knowles says. "She got up onstage and when she was finished, she received a standing ovation. Her mother [Tina Knowles] and I looked at each other and said, 'That can't be our Beyoncé. She's shy and quiet.' " Twenty-two years later, that simmering brew of shy, quiet talent peppered with fierce determination and ambition is at a boiling point. The former frontwoman of Destiny's Child has come into her own, enjoying one of the best years of a still-evolving solo career. On Oct. 2, Beyoncé will add one more honor to her array of accolades when she accepts Billboard's Woman of the Year Award. The presentation will be made at Billboard's Women in Music brunch in New York, recognizing the year's top 30 women in the music business. "Beyoncé is a multiplatinum artist and a multitalented woman who clearly embodies the qualities of excellence and achievement that the Billboard Woman of the Year Award was created to honor," Billboard editorial director Bill Werde says. "She has not only influenced pop culture with her hit songs and her signature dance moves, but has inspired women everywhere with her unique style, business savvy and dedication to charitable causes." Beyonce secretly sings for cancer victims

>> The name Beyonce may not have rung a bell for little Mohamed Saleh. But a kiss and a hug from the American R&B singer were all it took to make the 4-year-old's day. Yesterday afternoon, he met Beyonce, 28, at the Viva-University Children's Cancer Centre of the National University Hospital (NUH). Mohamed Saleh has cancer in his right foot and has been a patient at NUH since last November. His mother, 32-year-old housewife Kamsinah Bahari, told The New Paper on Sunday that they were told of Beyonce's visit by NUH staff on Friday. She said her son had greeted Beyonce and kissed her hand. And she then gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Beyonce's visit had also been a treat for Madam Kamsinah, who is a fan. Though a shy Saleh, who was wearing a face mask, did not speak much about his encounter with Beyonce when we met him, his eyes, which brightened at the mention of her name, clearly indicated his delight. Together with US group Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce performed a sold-out concert at Fort Canning Park's F1 Rocks Singapore with LG last night. During the 20-minute closed-door visit at NUH, Beyonce, who arrived at 4.15pm, serenaded 30 kids and their parents with acoustic versions of three songs including hits Halo and Irreplaceable, Madam Kamsinah said. Ever the professional, Beyonce had taken along a group of backup singers. Read more...

Tired Beyonce gets Perth retail therapy

>> Singer Beyonce Knowles has been spending up big to add some Perth fashion flavour to her wardrobe. She was spotted at Pasion Latina, Leederville, on Friday, where she bought a cream Martini jumpsuit and a simple T-shirt. Store manager Eve Beumer didn't recognise Knowles until streams of people entered the shop, calling the star's name. But Knowles was safe with two bodyguards, an assistant and her mum to protect her. Mrs Beumer said Knowles looked tired from Thursday night's concert at Burswood but she was "really lovely and really, really humble''. Knowles squeezed in the shopping before leaving Australia to continue her world tour. The same day, Knowles visited Elroy Clothing, in Mt Lawley, and Leederville stores Yo Yo Buffalo and Harry & Gretel. At Harry & Gretel, Knowles bought a Lucette dress, RMK shoes, Pure perfume and a studded leather bag. Store manager Cody Mason said business had picked up since Knowles' visit. "The store was so crowded with people because they were following her from shop to shop and she just seemed really unfazed by it,'' she said. Yo Yo Buffalo sales assistant Rikki-Bree Macgregor said Knowles spent about 15 minutes in the store on Friday and about half an hour the day before, when she bought 16 items. "She didn't try anything on, she knew what her size was,'' she said. Elroy Clothing manager Belinda Fletcher said everyone was "starstruck'' when Knowles came into the store to buy a maxidress, pants and other dresses. "With people you read about in magazines right in front of you, it's a pretty surreal thing,'' she said. When it was time to go, Knowles just had to say the word and transport was ready.

Rowland told The Mirror: "We're not getting back together, they're just rumours. "It seems people are thirsty for it to happen, but it's not on the books." She added: "Michelle is playing Roxie in Chicago, I'm working on my solo album and Beyoncé's got her own things going on."

Beyonce won't be 'naughty girl' at Malaysia show
posted on 25 Sep 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> Beyonce Knowles has sung about partying like a "naughty girl," but Malaysians can expect her to be on her best behavior for a concert in this Muslim-majority country next month, the event's organizer said Thursday. The R&B superstar has attracted criticism in recent days from the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, the country's largest opposition group, which wants authorities to scrap the Oct. 25 show because it would promote "Western sexy performances." Knowles, who is well-known for her provocative clothes and concert choreography, backed out of a concert in Malaysia two years ago after the Islamic party threatened to protest the show. Party officials have not planned any demonstrations for next month's event. Entertainment company Marctensia, the concert's Malaysian organizer, said Knowles should be regarded as a "role model" and "embodiment of success" because of her heavy involvement in philanthropy work, including campaigns against poverty and domestic violence. The company also allayed concerns that Knowles would wear inappropriate outfits, saying "all parties have come to an amicable understanding" about stage costumes at the stadium concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's largest city. "We are confident that (the concert) will once and for all silence international critics and put Malaysia back on track ... in presenting A-list international pop concerts in this region," Marctensia said in a statement.

The studio has enlisted Will Fetters to write the script for the film, about an up-and-coming starlet who becomes romantically involved with a well-known male star, says The Hollywood Reporter. The new Star will be the fourth version of the story, the most famous of which was released in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the lead roles. Like the Streisand offering, the new movie will take place in the record industry but reflect rolling celebrity news coverage. Previous big screen incarnations took place in Hollywood.

Beyonce's bootylicious burger
posted on 24 Sep 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> One of the world's biggest music stars, Beyonce, enjoyed a bootylicious burger at Leederville's Retro Betty's today and dropped a few hundred dollars on some hot fashion. In Perth and ready to rock the Burswood Dome tonight, there's a fair chance that the singer responsible for such mega hits as Single Ladies and Halo would have ordered the Booty burger from the longstanding Leederville establishment. The burger boasts chicken breast, lettuce, cheese bacon and mayo. Workers at the burger bar said a big entourage arrived in the middle of the lunch hour rush, making recognising the singing sensation in amongst her American posse a little difficult. Beyonce also enjoyed some time shopping on Oxford Street, heading into Atlas and Harry & Gretel clothing stores. Communications consultant Gemma Tognini saw the diva wearing denim hot pants, huge orange platform heels and a hoodie over her head while wandering the strip. "She was strolling around with a bit of an entourage," Ms Tognini said. "I counted three body guards. People were whispering but were a little bit star struck." Ms Tognini used social networking site Twitter to tell friends of her sighting the superstar in Leederville. "Just spoke to Beyonce in Leederville," she Tweeted. "Fact! I thanked her for being so nice to Taylor Swift. "She was wearing a hoodie, hotpants and these orange platform things. Her mamma was with her. Cute!" Ms Tognini said Beyonce had an amazing figure and was extremely beautiful despite trying to hide her face with the hoodie. "Even though she was wearing the hoodie over her head, it's hard to be inconspicuous on a wintry day wearing hot pants," she said. Harry & Gretel manager Cody Mason said Beyonce spent a few hundred dollars on some hot fashion in her store. A pair of big platform purple suede heels, a silk mini-dress and a pretty perfume bottle all took her fancy. "She was lovely," Ms Mason said. "We had a lot of people following her come into the store, but she was really cool."

Beyonce and me: Our brave Chelsea-Lee tells
posted on 23 Sep 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> Beyonce Knowles's star shone a little brighter during her Sydney concert at the weekend when the singer made the dreams of a young New Lambton cancer battler come true. Chelsea-Lee James, 11, shed tears as she stood on the stage at Beyonce's Acer Arena concert in front of more than 20,000 people. But they were tears of joy from this brave little girl plucked from the crowd by her idol. After dedicating her final song, Halo, to Michael Jackson, Beyonce called Chelsea-Lee to the stage, the superstar embracing her big-hearted fan. "It was breathtaking," Chelsea-Lee said. "She said 'you're a great dancer,' and just sang to me, it was so cool," she said. "Nothing else mattered in the world, it was me up there with Beyonce." The emotion was not lost on the crowd, with the moment caught on video, uploaded to website YouTube and recording thousands of hits. Beyonce knelt beside the awestruck girl, adapting her lyrics and singing "'Chelsea I can see your halo, I pray it won't fade away". The words meant so much more because of Chelsea-Lee's extraordinary struggle, mother Donna James said yesterday. The Herald documented the family's battle to have Chelsea-Lee's rare cancer, a primitive neuroectodermal tumour, diagnosed in 2003. After three failed attempts in a year, Chelsea-Lee was admitted to John Hunter Hospital where doctors discovered a 20-centimetre tumour on her spine. She was operated on within 24 hours and began five years of treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. When four tumours returned in 2006, she was given a one per cent chance of survival. Chelsea-Lee was again in remission, but the tumours could come back, Ms James said. Far from focusing on the difficulties of her battle, Chelsea-Lee is excited about the newest addition to her speed dial. "Beyonce phoned me up the next day and thanked me for coming on stage with her," Chelsea-Lee said. "For Beyonce to do that without even knowing what Chelsea-Lee's been through, that shows she is pretty special," Ms James said.
Beyoncé and Aerosmith to perform during F1 weekend
posted on 22 Sep 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> The pop star Beyoncé and rock band Aerosmith will be performing in Abu Dhabi as part of the Formula One racing weekend. Beyoncé, the singer of hits including ‘Single Ladies’, will open the Grand Prix festivities with a performance on October 29, sources close to the organisers have confirmed. Aerosmith, known for theme song to Armageddon ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ will perform the grand finale for the event, following Formula One’s first day/night race on November 1. Reports that No Doubt and Nelly Furtardo are also playing are incorrect, according to sources. The two acts who will perform on the other two night will be confirmed early next week. A statement from Flash Entertainment released this morning read: “Flash Entertainment can confirm there will be a fantastic line-up of artists performing on Yas Island during the race weekend. "Media speculation appearing today announcing Yas Island concerts is factually incorrect in the reporting of artist line-up, capacities, ticket holder access and location of performances. "All media have been invited to attend our launch press conference on September 28 where we will be announcing details of the activities planned.”
Beyonce sings Jessica Mauboy's praises
posted on 22 Sep 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> Proving yet again that she is as gracious as she is talented, nice gal Beyonce has given our own Jessica Mauboy her seal of approval. While most American superstars rarely deign to even meet the local act on tour, Ms B called Mauboy to her dressing room as soon as the 21-year-old pop princess had finished her opening set of the first show in Melbourne last week. And Ms Knowles had done her homework on the former Australian Idol, asking the 21-year-old about her hometown of Darwin and her cultural heritage, reports Kathy McCabe. Having being told by her crew about Mauboy's powerhouse voice, a hooded Beyonce checked out her performance at the Brisbane concert. Since then Team Beyonce have treated the Aussie singer like one of the family, raving about her voice and offering to co-write or work with her on future videos.
Hooded Beyonce sidles in
posted on 22 Sep 2009 by Klaudia0 Comments
>> Under the cover of darkness and in sunglasses, ripped white jeans and with a dark hooded jumper, popstar Beyonce Knowles sidled into Adelaide. It was a stark contrast from the all-empowering diva who dresses for the stage in a crystal corset. Rumoured to have been unwell on the Australian leg of her tour, Knowles made sure her visit to Adelaide was a fleeting one, touching down at the airport just two hours before she was due on stage at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Shielding her curvaceous form from prying eyes, Knowles stepped into a dark Audi with tinted windows and sped away. She arrived in the chartered flight terminal at James Schofield Drive about 6.45pm and was believed to have been driven directly to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. If I Were a Boy was welcomed with a loud roar before the over powering bass boomed, shaking not only hearts but the massive screens projecting her performance. Knowles then performed an empassioned snippet of Alanis Morrisette's You Oughtta Know as her hair flowed through the fans beneath her feet like a scene from many of her stunning film clips - leading to believe that Kanye West's childish claims earlier this month were true. Despite the stunning visuals and booming sound, unlike other pop acts such as Pink and Britney Spears - all eyes were on the performer and not the luxurious staging," I am here to empower women" she said before introfucing her all female band before the heartbreaking Me Myself and I.
